As we travel, we look for communities with homes with RV garages. We first came upon the RV Port Home concept last winter during our trip to Arizona. Though we liked the design of the homes at Superstition Views at Canyon Vistas, we wanted a site built home. It turns out we found a few alternatives within 10 miles of The Villages.
Homes with RV Garages: Green Key Village
Green Key Village is a net-zero energy community in Lady Lake just 5 miles from our home. “Net-zero” means the home will produce as much energy as the average household consumes in Central Florida. This is achieved by building an energy-efficient shell, installing highly efficient appliances and mechanical systems, and installing a solar electric system on the roof. There are of course other benefits to this community’s green design:
- The interiors and exteriors offer stunning Key West designs, offering you that vacation feel even when you are “at home”;
- Intelligent design and use of low-emitting materials offers a healthy option;
- The community is gated for added safety when you are on the road;
- Not only are you immune to future energy inflation, you are currently eligible for a federal tax credit; and
- Finally, the community garden and net-zero design makes you feel good about living green.
We happened to visit on a day the developer/builder was in the sales office. We learned that he will cutomize the homes, and can include a RV garage assuming the lot is of adequate size and slopes away from the street. The slope of the land is key because all their homes’ garages are attached behind the home. The slope of the land enables him to build a garage that is high enough for a motorhome while being invisible from the street.
Current floor plans range from 1602-2870 square feet and start at $350,570. This may seem a bit high for central Florida, but the initial investment (which includes the investment in solar panels and system) is recovered over time with low operating costs. Monthly operating costs (including insurance, all utilities, property taxes and home owner’s association) is under $850/month; and amenities are already in place including a pool, pond, tennis court, basketball court, community garden and pickleball court.
Homes with RV Garages: Lake Weir Preserve
If, like me, you spend far too much time on Facebook chatting with others in RVing Groups…you may have seen an advertisement for Lake Weir Preserve. A Miami developer purchased 400+ acres within 10 miles of the northern end of The Villages in Ocklawaha, Florida. Approximately three years ago, in partnership with a local builder, he began developing a community of custom homes that feature RV and “toy” garages.
Ocklawaha is a bit off the beaten track, just 4 miles from the Ocala National Forest, near Lake Weir and 35 natural artesian springs. These are truly custom homes on lots from .25 acres to 1.0+ acres. I asked about “architectural review” since I love mid-century modern design and was told that that would be fine. The only limitation is imposed by Marion County that requires dwellings to be at least 1000 square feet of livable area…guess we won’t be seeing any permanent tiny houses in Marion County anytime soon.
We toured one of the homes nearing completion and spent some time inspecting the RV garage. It was huge, built to house a 40′ Newmar, a shop/craft area and a storage area. The garage was built to accommodate slides and offered full hookups.
Homes start in the mid-$200’s and there is no HOA at Lake Weir. For amenities, they boast about the nearby Villages, Eaton Beach and Ocala. So if you are looking for homes with RV garages, your options are growing. And as we discovered, don’t discount a builder that is willing to be creative.
