In our continuing journey to find a community of RV port homes, we journeyed to Mission Texas. A small community at the southeastern tip of Texas, on the Rio Grande. We found a small, laid back community, friendly people, a low-cost of living and pickleball.
Truth be told, I really can’t recall how I learned about Bentsen Palms and Retama Village. Bentsen Palms is a very large planned community which will, when finalized, include single family homes, commercial properties, an over 55 community, and RV park. Retama Village offers 55+ RVer’s homesite options. After doing some research on the web, we spoke to one of their sales representatives. She offered us three complimentary nights of camping, so we included Mission in our trip itinerary.
As we drove onto the Bentsen Palms property, we were surprised at the amount of open land. We later learned that the development was opened in late 2007, just as the bottom fell out of the US housing market. It took some time, but the community is now recovering. Perhaps this is because this area boast’s Texas’ lowest cost of living. Certainly, the advantageous tax situation in Texas is a draw for retirees as well. Whatever the reason, the area in and around McAllen, Mission’s nearest neighbor, is among the fastest growing in Texas.
RV Port Home Options
Adjacent to the Retama Village is a very nice RV Park called Bentsen Palm RV Resort. We cruised on over on our bikes because we were told they had pickleball. In fact, we found one court surrounded by grass that could do in a pinch. That is not to suggest that this isn’t a nice 55+ RV park. The pool looked lovely, the grounds were immaculate and the clubhouse bulletin board suggested there was plenty to do.
However, if you are looking for more than just your standard RV hookup, consider Retama Village. There you will find a variety of options for RVer’s that want more than just a place to park. We were provided with what they call a “RV Supersite“. This is a very large site with full hookup, cable TV and wi-fi, a 12’x24′ site built “coach house”, a patio and additional paved parking area. The coach house is roughed in with plumbing for a full bath and laundry area. You can choose to finish the coach house as a spare bedroom, addition entertaining space, or for crafts or storage.
Moving up from there, they offer RV Casitas. These replace the coach house with a 740 sq ft casita (again site built) and finished to a pretty high standard. This one bedroom, one bath stucco structure included granite countertops and was Energy Star Certified. As we drove around the property, we noticed owners had customized their sites, adding pergolas, summer kitchens, addition storage and the like.
If you want more living space, consider one of their four RV Port Homes, which range in size from 800 to more than 1500 square feet. Again full hookups are provided in the RV port, as well as additional parking, a courtyard, and up to 4 bedrooms/2.5 baths. We toured one home that had been extended over the years and even included a separate mother-in-law suite. While the RV Port Homes ranged from $179,900 to $299,900; the RV supersites start at $59,000. So it seemed there is something for every price range.
We also found lovely amenities at Retama Village. A large pool and nearby jacuzzi seemed to be a meeting place for many residents. Adjacent to the pool is a spacious clubhouse. The clubhouse includes craft rooms, card rooms, library, indoor and outdoor kitchen. We spent a great deal of time enjoying the warm, dry valley weather while relaxing by the pool.
As the property borders the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park and miles of bike trails, this is a natural destination for cyclists and hikers. It appeared a lot of the folks are seasonal residents, living in their home on wheels 4-8 months a year. We also found a significant number of birders who were drawn by the World Birding Center.
We ventured off property to play pickleball..and are pleased to report there are at least two locations for pickleball in the immediate area. We will report on that in a future post.
