More and more we see pickleball instructors offering a pickleball destination along with their instructional camps. Today, we offer you another option as it relates to pickleball travel…a pickleball destination and tournament in San Carlos Mexico.
Following a subscriber survey a few weeks back we were contacted by a reader encouraging us to visit San Carlos Mexico. Frankly, before deciding to relocate to California we had begun thinking about Mexico as an option. So when Becky encouraged us to bring OLGA south of the border we were intrigued. When she suggested we could participate in a pickleball tournament we started texting and emailing RV Pickler friends!
Nestled between the Sea of Cortez and the mountains and an easy 6.5-hour drive from Tucson, San Carlos Mexico is a popular place for people to visit. American and Canadian ex-pats come and enjoy numerous activities both on shore and in the water in this safe, picturesque and welcoming community. You’ll find San Carlos offers many opportunities for fun in the sun including:
- water sports including boating, fishing, kayaking, jet skiing and paddle boarding;
- land based activities from golf to mountain climbing; and
- relaxing while watching a spectacular sunset or dining in its many fabulous restaurants.
With an average daily temperature in February of 74 degrees Fahrenheit, you can see why so many Canadian and Americans call this part of the world their winter home.
San Carlos Pickleball
The influx of ex-pats has spurred the growth of pickleball. San Carlos boasts the Mirador Courts, a new 6 court complex with views of the marina and Sea of Cortez. With over 200 active members, you’ll find the San Carlos Pickleball Association a welcoming and happy group.
In February 2018, the club is hosting a unique four-day event. From February 9th to 11th, 2018, they will hold the Sombrero Showdown an age/skill pickleball tournament that includes a SSIPA division. The entry fee of $45 also entitles the player to play in the Amigos Cup on February 12th during which the San Carlos Pickleball Association will take on the world in a fun round robin event. Registration is now open for this event.
Mapping our route from our future home in the California Desert, it appears it will be a two-day drive for these RV Picklers. Our current plan is to drive to just south of Tucson on day one, then cross into Mexico near Nogales on day two. We can find listings for two RV campsites in San Carlos, and one Totonaka RV Park has 4-star ratings on RVParkReviews. We have been told by the “locals” that a third RV park, El Mirador RV, will be opening shortly next to the pickleball courts. A restaurant and pool will also be available on site. The RV Park is still in development, and we will share details with our subscribers when it becomes available.
I suspect if you are planning to take your motorhome to San Carlos you will want to make campsite reservations soon as this is their busiest season. Regardless, of how you travel to this pickleball destination we recommend you add San Carlos to your 2018 winter pickleball travel calendar. Hope to see you there!
