According to the USAPA there are approximately 3,777 places to play pickleball in the US. Of the more than 300 located in the state of Florida, there are three listed in Tallahassee and one offered play on Saturday. A quick Facebook search found the Tallahassee Pickleball group and my message was promptly answered by Judy Lyle, inviting us to join them.
An easy 30 minute drive from our campsite, we arrived shortly after 8:30am. The group utilizes an indoor basketball court in the large Premier Fitness Center. Guests are charged $7.00 to play, but then have access to the entire facility (weight room, indoor and outdoor pool, track, showers and locker rooms, etc) throughout the day. The group has three courts on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Ever gracious, Judy Lyle was waiting for us at the door and welcomed us warmly. She reported that pickleball is growing in Tallahassee, and they continue to explore getting more court time. On this day there were 30 players ranging from 2.5 to advanced players. Perhaps the nicest aspect of the group was the diversity of ages. Though the fitness facility does not allow children to play, the players today ranged from 20 somethings to AARP members like us. Players cycle onto the court by means of a sign up sheet.
